Design experts predict that Silvers will be trending in interior design this year. I will tell you, I don’t like “trends” or talk of “trends.” But this is one I can get behind, because silvers are so classic they can’t be trendy, whether they’re “trending” or not.
What is the Silvers Trend?
When design experts predict a silvers trend, this means that they expect more people to choose to use silver finishes in their homes than they have in the recent past. In the recent past, brass finishes have been very popular. So, it’s not surprising that now people are starting to look back to silvers.
What are Silvers?
Silvers are silver finishes. It includes chrome, nickel, pewter, and stainless steel finishes. These finishes are often found on hardware (e.g., knobs, pulls, latches), light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and decor for example. Both Chrome and Nickel can be found in polished and brushed finishes as well. You can also find Nickel in a satin finish, which has somewhat less texture than a brushed finish but is not shiny like a polished finish.
What’s the Difference Between Chrome, Nickel, and Stainless Steel if They’re All Silver?
Chrome:
Chrome has cool undertones and has a polished finish. It’s easy to clean and durable. It typically has more luster (shine) and is brighter than stainless steel.
Nickel:
Nickel has warm undertones. That means, when mixing metals, nickel pairs well with brass. Nickel is very durable. However, it’s more susceptible to spotting if used around water, for example. Though they’re fairly easily removed. Nickel is usually more expensive than chrome or stainless steel. And it comes in polished, satin, and brushed finishes. Satin has less texture than the brushed finish. And if a brushed nickel fixture gets scratched they can actually be sanded out.
Stainless Steel:
Stainless steel has more gray undertones than chrome. Stainless steel is also more durable (scratches less easily) than nickel or chrome. It tends to be the less expensive finish of the three.
Why I’m All For the Silvers Trend
As you may know, as a general rule, I don’t like trends or even talk of trends. But I’m in favor of the Silvers Trend because silvers are so classic, they never go out of style. I would argue they’re even less “trendy” than brass, which is also a true classic, when done right.
Silvers like chrome and nickel have been used in interiors for over a century. True silver has been used in interiors well even before that. If you’re looking to add something “trendy” to your home but don’t want to waste your money on a fad, adding silver to your home is the way to go this year.
